Why Shutting Off the Water Quickly Is So Important

Think of your water shut-off valve as your home’s emergency brake. Water can cause terrible destruction  in minutes. Floors warp, drywall absorbs moisture, and mold can begin forming within 24–48 hours. Turning off the water supply immediately:

  • Stops ongoing flooding or leaks.
  • Limits structural and property damage.
  • Reduces cleanup and repair costs.
  • Makes emergency plumbing repairs safer and faster.

How to Shut Off Water to a Single Fixture

For smaller, localized problems, you may only need to shut off water to one fixture.

Common fixtures with individual shut-off valves include Toilets, Sinks, and Washing machines.

How to do it:

  • Look underneath or behind the fixture.
  • Find the small valve connected to the water line.
  • Turn the valve clockwise (to the right) until it stops.

How to Shut Off the Main Water Supply

If the leak is severe or you can’t isolate it, shut off the main water supply.

Where to Find the Main Water Shut-Off Valve

Single-family homes – Usually located where the water line enters the house—often in a garage, basement, utility room, or outside near the foundation.

Condos or apartments: May be in a shared utility area or mechanical room. Contact building management if unsure.

Commercial buildings: Typically in a mechanical room, basement, or near the water meter.

How to Turn It Off

Locate the valve (it may be a gate valve or ball valve).

  • Ball valve: A visual cue is the lever handle position
(open = parallel to pipe, closed = perpendicular) Turn the lever so it is perpendicular to the pipe.
  • Gate valve: A visual cue is a circular wheel handle that twists. Turn multiple times until fully closed.

Turn on any faucet to confirm your water is off.

Prepare Before an Emergency Happens

The best time to learn this is before you are standing in ankle-deep water.

Take these proactive steps:

  1. Locate and label all shut off valves.
  2. Test the main shut-off valve annually.
  3. Make sure all household members know what to do.

For businesses, include shut-off locations in your emergency response plan.
