With Halloween approaching we’re all a little more anxious about things that go bump in the night.

But what about things that go flush in the night?

Sometimes a toilet will flush by itself when no one is around. It might be ghosts, but the more likely explanation is a defective flapper.

For those who are not fluent in toilet talk, the flapper is that circular rubber disc that covers the hole at the bottom of the toilet’s tank. When it’s working right, the toilet only flushes when someone pulls the handle. But if the flapper becomes worn it won’t form a tight seal. The result – water seeps back into the bowl, and the toilet makes a lot more noise than it should.

No big deal? It will be when you see next month’s water bill. Replacement flappers are available at any hardware store, but if you don’t want to attempt the repair yourself, contact us.
